Happy 9th Birthday Alexis!!!

Alexis is 9 years old!!!  This little girl was the start of our family...and every day since the moment of her arrival, our family has continued to grow in life, love, and laughter.  She has brought much joy to us!

This year, Alexis wanted to know more about the day she was born and since I write a monthly update about Jace, I thought it would be fun to share the story of her birthday and some of our first milestones as new parents.

On Friday, February 23, 2001, Alexis Marie Kubesh was born at 2:55 p.m. via induction at Immanuel St. Joseph's Hospital in Mankato, MN.  She weighed 7 pounds, 11 ounces and was 19 inches long...such a little peanut compared to her two younger brothers!

In the weeks leading up to her birth, I remember thinking I would deliver much earlier because I was dilated to 4 cm for almost a month...I even quit working a week before her arrival in preparation for life with a newborn.  During that time, I spent every minute cleaning, organizing, perfecting her nursery, rechecking my bags for the hospital, reviewing my birth plan, and SLEEPING.  Luckily I did sleep a lot, because I was definitely unprepared for the next two months of sleepless nights that were to come.

The night before my induction, I didn't sleep at all for obvious reasons, but I also had a terrible cold.  I remember being so nervous about the delivery and the inevitable pain that was to come.  The morning of the 23rd, we arrived at the hospital at 6:00 a.m.  The nurses were very quick to get me admitted and to get my delivery going.  I HATED getting the IV in my hand because it took a second nurse to get it right after the first one failed the first 3 attempts.  To this day, I remember that part fondly and hate getting an IV.

The hours before Alexis's birth were pretty unremarkable and the pain was typical of a normal delivery I guess.  (After having an epidural with my 3rd, I wonder why I ever thought I had to tough it out the first two times).  I did experience irregular contractions with Alexis and it took over an hour of pushing before she decided to make her debut, but it was all worth it!  She was greeted with lots of tears and cheers by myself, her daddy, and her grandma (my mom).

Unfortunately, I was not able to hold her for awhile because she was having breathing difficulty and needed oxygen.  The nurses kept close watch on her because her breathing was shallow and she was so very sleepy.  I remember being very nervous, asking the doctor why she wasn't crying.  He made me laugh by telling me I would probably never ask that question again and assured me she would start crying soon enough...and she did!  The first time I held her, I remember being mesmerized by her beauty and smell.  She had the most petite features and I just loved her tiny toes!

The rest of our hospital stay was filled with visitors from family and friends.  There was a BIG snow storm that weekend, so many friends and family members from out of town were unable to make it.  However, the months ahead were filled with weekend visits from many!

So, February 23rd will forever be remembered as the start of our family.  I could cuddle with Alexis for hours then and can still cuddle with her for hours now.  She has always kept us on our toes, and I don't ever see that changing for us.  Alexis lives life to the fullest and is always excited about the next thing!

Happy Birthday Alexis!  I'm so proud to be your mommy!
